Beatty’s engrossing epic, following the life of journalist-turned-revolutionary, John Reed, during the 1910s in America and Russia, is a well-made and even-handed portrait of passionate people attempting, and generally failing, to bridge the horribly messy gap between ideals and cold, hard reality.
