Talented actress Sarah Polley’s directorial debut, an adaptation of Alice Munro’s short story, The Bear Came Over the Mountain, which explores the effects of Alzheimer’s disease and institutional care on a 40-year-old marriage, manages to depict difficult subject matter with controlled respect: the performances are restrained, the camera unobtrusive, and the overall effect is quietly devastating.
