Welles’s allegorical minor masterpiece, an adaptation of Kafka’s acclaimed novel, following a man accused of an unnamed crime as he strives to prove his innocence, is a beautifully photographed and nightmarish vision of the futility of one man’s attempts to achieve freedom in the shadow of the ruling class’s needs and wants.
